I listened to the audiobook Premium You Are My Happy Place Shirt on my “sanity walks” around the neighborhood as COVID was breaking out a few months back. Quite interesting to bounce back and forth between the news and WWZ, as well as listening to Max’s appearances on NPR at the time. As silly as it sounds, I switched to more “pure” SciFi, for lack of a better word, afterward as a break from zombie/pandemic stuff! Most definitely, ignore the movie. The book has no resemblance to the movie besides a worldwide zombie plague, similarities end there. One of the Halo games had a pre-release promotion series of videos, where they interviewed the survivors of the war with the Covenant and they told their individual stories in a personal, candid way. That promo series was not super high quality, but it was in the same documentary style as the WWZ book. I’d like to see it.

Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t what we wanted, but I’m not sure any movie could have been. The storytelling style is just too incompatible with a 150 minutes theater experience. I hate how the movie butchered the book. The only things in the movie that were in the book Premium You Are My Happy Place Shirts were the title and the nuclear explosion over the middle east. I always thought a good adaption would have been a Band if Brothers-style mini-series on HBO. Like, have someone be interviewed like the book and then show the dramatization of their experiences. It’d be an anthology series with Max Brooks/Interviewer be the thread that runs through each episode. I recommend checking out Robopocalypse as well, told in a somewhat similar fashion. If you like this you may also enjoy the new Romero zombie novel “the living dead”. It’s in a similar format.
